An open letter to State Legislatures

Regarding your impending vote on CRL 50-a

7 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

The idea that records of police and public officials actions are confidential and cannot be reviewed without consent is frankly insulting to the people subsidizing their continued employment (taxpayers). Those charged with protecting their citizens (police), if acting morally and with the sole intent of protecting the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, should have no problem having their actions on display and subject to appropriate scrutiny. If they are truly acting honorable, justice will prevail. In certain fields there is no room for mistake. There cant be bad apples in medicine, or in aviation, or in the physics that bring men and women to space. There is no room for error in certain areas that involve holding human life in your hands. If you are in a position where you can be responsible for whether someone lives or dies, you need to be held accountable for your actions. There is no room for mistake, and that should be reflected in the consequences those people face. Doctors lose licenses for malpractice. Making the stakes higher for those who have taken a vow to protect human life ensures that fewer take that vow lightly. This is a small change that could mean fewer bad apples; a small step that could have lasting impact and real change to the lives of humans. YOU can help make this world safer for everybody. This is not a political issue, this is a human rights issue. I implore you to recognize the impact this could have, and consider putting human life first. Hold people accountable for their actions. Justice will prevail.
