As your constituent, I demand that there be law enforcement reform within our country NOW.
The ununnecessary, gruesome death of George Floyd has once again highlighted the desperate need for police reform in this country. Black families and People of Color should not have to live in fear that their loved ones will die without reason and without representation at the hands of a force that has sworn to protect citizens.
It takes 7 years of schooling and training to become a lawyer while it takes 13-22 weeks of training to become a police officer, both of which must uphold and maintain the law. It has been proven that educated officers are less likely to exhibit brutality or racially profiling. They are also less likely to fire their weapons on the job.
We MUST institute broad changes into the training of officers: including tighter restrictions on police force applications, proper training to de-escalate situations of noncooperation, the improved oversight into the use of weapons and tear gas, and a deeper understanding of the United States law (and especially within the Fourth Amendment.)
I also believe that it is imperative that a law is passed that requires ALL police (local, state, and federal officers) to wear body cameras and have dash cams in their vehicles to ensure accountability, proper behavior, and increase community trust and transparency.
There MUST be reform. Our country is hurting and the longer it takes for you to do something, the longer you are not fulfilling your duty to the American people. DO SOMETHING.
