Long Term Care Crisis Reaches 180 Days

164 so far! Let’s get to 250 signers!

It has now been 180 days or six months that long term care residents have been prohibited the visitors they are entitled to by law. People are dying alone while the rest of us cut ribbons and debate bars and hair salons. The Phase 1 guidelines adopted by HHSC on August 7 are so restrictive that nursing homes are not even applying. It is time for legislators to make daily calls to the governor and for the governor to allow legislators to participate in decisions being made during these unprecedented circumstances. Lifelong spouses are separated. People with cognitive issues are wondering why they have been abandoned. People with dementia and Alzheimer's are slipping away without family in their final months. If this continues much longer, we will not even have a recognizable long term care industry this time next year. We need an essential caregiver plan and we need it now. 20,000 Texans who signed the Texas Caregivers for Compromise petition mailed to the governor today agree. There will always be another valid reason for a delay. But we cannot isolate innocent human beings indefinitely. We are saving them to death.
