An open letter to the U.S. Congress Block Trump's New Chinese Exclusion Act
22 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! Block Trump's New Chinese Exclusion Act!
Senators and Representatives must come together to block President Trump's newest xenophobic proclamation banning Chinese international students who are associated with the PRC's 'military strategy.' Because of the broad application of this label - including upon traditional research universities - we know that the proclamation effectively functions as a ban on Chinese graduate and postgraduate student immigration. Mr. Trump assumes without evidence that all Chinese students coming to learn in the U.S. are spies, which is patently false and only fuels further conspiracy theories. Many of these students go on to become Americans and are integral parts of our academic institutions, economy, and society. The Proclamation further provides cover for increased racial profiling, terminations, and baseless investigations of Chinese Americans in academic settings, which we have seen spike over the last several years. In a time when Asian Americans are seeing a rapid rise in hate incidents, it is only destructive to vilify and scapegoat the students of an entire nation, as well as Chinese Americans who have origins there. OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates wrote an open letter to the President calling for the withdrawal of this xenophobic proclamation, with over 160 signatures from elected officials and advocacy groups. Now, we are calling on you to do your part by blocking this Presidential Proclamation and lifting the immigration ban on Chinese students.
