An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Calling for change in the racial biases

I go to New Hope Solebury High School, a school touted for its academic excellence. What many don't see are the everyday examples of subliminal racism that reinforce white supremacy in a county that is 88% white. I have gone through three years of high school and haven't read a book written by an African American as part of the school curriculum. I too often hear racist vitriol out of the mouths of my fellow white classmates who are too willfully ignorant to realize the kinds of systems and stereotypes they're reinforcing. This is the kind of racism that does the most damage in the long run because it's the hardest to identify: it's death by a thousand cuts. At a time when police brutality is at the forefront of the national dialogue, I'm writing to demand your commitment in Congress to anti-racist policies, and to push local public school districts to educate more on privilege and racism beyond the rudimentary whitewashed understanding of MLK's activism that white people love to praise for ending racism or something. Issues like these are more pervasive than you'd think, and I as a white male don't even experience the real kinds of racism that my classmates of color do on a daily basis. Please speak out against injustice, it's your job.
