I am writing to you in response to the Trump Administration's decision to end protections for transgender people against sex discrimination in health care. This latest attack on the transgender community is a disgrace. This does not reflect the values of the citizens of our country. We cannot allow this president to continuously bully minority groups, especially our transgender community who are already at-risk. They deserve our love and compassion and need protection, not to be cast to the outskirts of society. It's cruel and unnecessary. Please ask yourself, who does this protect? How does this make our country "great"?
People who identify as transgender already struggle with a myriad of issues that cisgender people could never understand. It is even worse for transgender women of color who are being murdered in record numbers with hardly any notice. They are not safe in the streets and now can't be ensured safety in a hospital.
According to the Trevor Project, in a national study, 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt. 92% of these individuals reported having attempted suicide before the age of 25.3. This cruel decision puts these groups at serious risk for abuse by others and self harm. We cannot let this happen.
Please, use your voice and speak to your colleagues about this issue. We must pass protective laws that cannot be overturned by a cruel and bigoted administration. We must protect our transgender and non binary community. We must stand up for one another.
