An open letter to the U.S. Congress Ending Qualified Immunity Act
17 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! Ending Qualified Immunity Act
I support Senator Harris in her statement: “It is clear that the Supreme Court's qualified immunity doctrine is broken and in need of reform. It is time that we say clearly that police officers should be held accountable to the law and to the people they are sworn to protect…”
Congressman Justin Amash (MI-03) proposed the “Ending Qualified Immunity Act” to eliminate qualified immunity and restore Americans’ ability to obtain relief when police officers violate their constitutionally secured rights.
Additionally, Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Ilhan Omar (MN-05) introduced a resolution condemning police brutality, racial profiling, and the excessive use of force.
These proposals are in response to the recent murder of George Floyd and a history of violent and unconstitutional policing towards Black Americans.
Law enforcement can no longer be shielded from accountability when they violate someone’s civil rights. I urge you to sponsor/sign both of these forms to support anti-racism and to fulfill your duty of upholding democracy. We must act now and end qualified immunity.
