An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures Requiring Sufficient Police Training
10 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! I am imploring you to increase the required hours of police training and qualifications to become a police officer in Maryland. Most counties only require around 30 weeks of police academy and a high school diploma. The people of Maryland deserve a well-trained, expert police force so to limit the kinds of tragedies that happen to George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, and so many other black and brown people across Maryland and the U.S. Police officers must be required to go through 2 years or more like in European countries such as Norway and Germany, which have much lower rates of citizens being killed by police. Additionally, officers must be required to attend at least a 2-year community college where they must take classes on social work, psychology, criminal law, and other such courses that prepare them for protecting and serving Maryland. For the sake of black folks and all Marylanders,
I implore you to take action and keep out communities safe from untrained police.
