Honor Chadwick Boseman’s Memory by Repealing the Heritage Act

72 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

I'm writing today to ask you to repeal the South Carolina Heritage Act. This would allow the residents of Anderson, SC to make a local decision about whether to remove the Confederate monument in their city center and replace it with a memorial to Anderson native Chadwick Boseman. In the weeks since Mr. Boseman's death, over 300,000 people--including tens of thousands of South Carolinians--have signed petitions to remove this monument and replace it with a memorial to him. But the Heritage Act prevents Anderson's residents from making a democratic choice about how to honor Mr. Boseman. One of the petitions, with over 200,000 signatures, states: "Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure and his accolades go on and on. It is only fitting that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him... I believe that Mr. Boseman is worthy of the spot that is currently occupied [by the Confederate monument] in the town square... One cannot go downtown with seeing or passing by this monument. It is unfair and undemocratic that the residents of Anderson County cannot even assemble to vote on whether or not this statue should remain... The statue has been placed on public land and is maintained by taxpayer dollars. It only makes sense that the people should have a say on what goes on this land. The function of a government is to serve all of its people." Due to the Heritage Act, the local officials of Anderson are forced to maintain a monument celebrating the Confederacy, against the will of many residents, while adding a memorial to Boseman. This is undemocratic and unacceptable. Continuing to honor white supremacists whose ideology opposed all that Boseman accomplished in his life dishonors his memory. I am calling on you to vote to repeal the Heritage Act and give the people of Anderson--and all South Carolinians--the freedom to shape their own communities to reflect their values, unconstrained by government overreach.
