An open letter to State Governors

Thank you and a request re: Coronavirus

6 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

First, I wanted to thank you for your active response to the Coronavirus outbreak in Washington State. Making sure that people will have access to testing regardless of ability to pay will make such a huge difference in the health of Washingtonians. I wanted to ask you to take another step, one that will be vital to hourly workers, part-time workers, and vulnerable people in jobs that can't be done remotely: If it is within your power, expand the scope of the Washington Family Medical Leave Act to cover anyone who is unable to go into work due to Corornavirus and has insufficient sick leave to cover it. The lack of sick leave is a direct contributor to the spread of this illness. Huge numbers of your constituents have to choose between going in to work sick or being able to afford rent and food. We are going to see vast numbers of people evicted, or go hungry, or continue to work while ill and contribute to the spread of the disease. We already have a program in place to cover people who have to take extended time off work for medical reasons--let's make sure it applies to the most vulnerable populations. Extend the Washington Family Medical Leave Act to cover all sick leave while we fight the Coronavirus. It will make a huge difference both financially and epidemiologically--and it will also make a huge difference for me, home sick with what is probably a cold but using up my 4.23 hours of sick just in case.
