I write to you today, asking you to follow the leadership of women like Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Ilhan Omar and the many others who support the immediate cancellation of student debt in response to the economic catastrophe caused by Republicans slavish devotion to big business and the usual Democratic fecklessness in the face of donor pressure. You still have the opportunity to save yourselves politically and the rest of us financially. While the recently proposed HEROES Act is unsurprisingly insufficient in the face of the next Great Depression, it does include provisions to cancel student debt. Every effort should be made to enact these provisions into law, as one part of an overall push to eliminate all student debt and make public colleges tuition free. No one wants to hear about the debt - no one mentions the debt when it's time to give the WalMart heirs a tax break; no one says a word when it's time to spend on the next civil rights-violating mass surveillance technology; not a peep when it's time to send billion dollar robots to drop bombs on poor brown people. In the middle of this world changing event, after watching the Republican party use the occasion to reshape society, maybe you can finally take some action that will help us. Cancel student debt.
