An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Federal troops should NOT be policing American streets

33 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

I have long believed that local municipalities know best how to handle their own problems. In rare occasions of civil rights being violated, the federal government needs to step in, but local and state authorities should always be the first consulted. This is why I watch with increasing horror as the current administration steps in to "police" cities around the country, often for a variety of reasons that increasingly feel like pretexts (protests in Portland, drugs and gangs in Chicago, some other reason in Detroit). This should not be the role of the federal government. It should definitely not be the role of the federal government when state and local authorities object to the involvement. And it's unconscionable that these steps would be taken to remove people's constitutional rights (like assembly and free speech) by a President and his mainly acting cabinet members who want to be able to use these actions for campaigning purposes. Congress has the important constitutional role of oversight over the executive branch. Please work to provide that oversight to an executive branch run so far amuck as to make the greatest nation in the world look like a tin-pot dictatorship. America needs your leadership and your voice.
