Support HR 6515 Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act
Please support HR 6515 Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act as proposed by Representative Ilhan Omar. It was the federal government's failure to respond to the COVID-19 threat that allowed the pandemic to spread across our country and kill upwards of 78,000 Americans, and now we need federal solutions to protect the people from the fallout. Local and state efforts to halt evictions and foreclosures in the short-term are not enough. Their scope is too narrow and many serve simply to delay displacement and homelessness as regular folks will be unable to catch up their missed payments once the freeze is lifted. We need The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act to protect renters, mortgage holders, and, yes, landlords during the extended period of upheaval that federal failure has wrought. I have watched with disgust as Congress passes one relief package after another with barrels of money for businesses and organizations, even those that don't pay taxes, engaged in stock buybacks, intend to layoff employees, fail to provide safe working conditions, and/or refuse to refund pandemic-affected consumers. The few programs that purport to help small business owners and their employees came too late and with too many hoops to nump through be of much help to anyone without a banker on speed dial. The slow rollout of the paltry Economic Impact Payment and circuitously-administered FPUC and PUA payments leave too many of us wanting. What would actually help regular Americans (by that shorthand I mean all US residents, citizens and documented/undocumented immigrants alike) is meaningful relief from rent and mortgage payments like that proposed by Rep. Omar in HR 6515. I implore you to remember for whom you work: not corporations, not special interests, not party leadership, but your constituents. Go to the mattresses, and get those constituents the relief they need written into the next package!
