Police all across the country have been brutalizing and unilaterally executing Black people for anything from petty offenses to imagined threats to mistaken identity. What steps have you taken to remedy this systemic abuse? Body cams and implicit bias training haven’t stopped these extrajudicial killings. And it's time to consider the reason why: policing is a profession of violence. These past couple of weeks, with the whole world watching, police have beaten, gassed, and arrested peaceful protestors, medics, legal observers, and journalists alike. This is not a question of a few bad apples. We cannot and should not expect police to do the work of social workers and community builders while trained to subdue threats and armed like an occupying military force.
Please enact legislation to end qualified immunity so that the police are not above the law.
Please enact legislation to drastically defund local police. Police should not have military equipment to use against their own community.
Please enact legislation to use these newly freed funds to build housing for the housing insecure.
Please enact legislation to use these newly freed funds for crisis response teams and mental health services.
Please enact legislation to use these newly freed funds to build harm reduction programs for drug dependency.
Please enact legislation to divert funds from the police to build more public health measures, and to fund more PPE for healthcare workers.
Please help turn this police state into a place that cares for the social wellbeing of all residents. Not just citizens, but all residents. All of us - citizens, documented immigrants, and undocumented immigrants - contribute to society with our work and our taxes and our existence.
