An open letter to the U.S. Congress

GOP Senators, Supreme Court Confirmation

13 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

In March of 2016, there was a great deal of debate about filling the seat of Justice Scalia. Senate republican leader Mitch McConnell said the Supreme Court vacancy “should not be filled until we have a new president.” Senator Alexander said, “I believe it is reasonable to give the American people a voice by allowing the next president to fill this lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.” The reason that the writers of our Constitution did not afford citizens the right to vote for Supreme Court Justices was to insulate the court from politics and allow it to fulfill its function of interpreting the law as objectively as possible. I am asking for Republican Senators to prove the truth and constitutionality of their statements in 2016 regarding the appointment of a new Supreme Court justice. In 2016, confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice was delayed for over 200 days, the reason given was to wait for a new president and avoid political upheaval. To fast track a Supreme Court confirmation now, so soon before a presidential election, would illustrate the untruth of GOP senators statements in 2016, and show that they are interested not in the constitutional objectivity of the Supreme Court, but in further embroiling the court in party politics. If GOP senators are interested in abiding by the constitution, I ask that they stand by party members statements in 2016 and wait until after the election to confirm a new Supreme Court justice.
