Change to the JUSTICE Act
I hope this email finds you well and ready to take action against systematic oppression in the United States. More specifically through police violence and misconduct. I would like to thank you for you proactivity in co-sponsoring the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act, as this is a crucial first step in the many steps of reforming our corrupt justice system. There are many ideas included in this act that would aid in effective reform, such as requiring full reporting of occurrences in which and officer discharges their weapon or uses force and the federal criminalization of lynching. However, I am discouraging the lack of language present on the reduction of police funding. The JUSTICE Act looks towards increasing the amount of deescalation training and other methods of training that require increased police department funding. While this may seem like a viable solution, you must understand that this issue has deep roots of injustice that cannot be fixed by simply providing more money. I urge you not only to discard this objective from the JUSTICE Act, but also to defund the police and stop the flow of money that has aided in the over policing, prejudice, and the systematic displacement of black and brown communities in North Carolina. These funds should be reallocated into social programs that will reduce poverty, homelessness, improve mental health and substance abuse care, provide adequate funding schools in underprivileged areas, and so much more. Please do your part as a North Carolina Senator and implement what is best for the people in which you represent, not the companies. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing these actions implemented.
