An open letter to the U.S. Congress

We need COVID-19 relief right now, without means testing

14 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

I'm writing today to urge Congress to immediately pass non-means tested relief for every American in the light of the COVID-19 disaster. We are barely seeing the tip of this iceberg, and already thousands have lost their jobs or livelihoods. Last year's tax returns mean nothing when you are abruptly out of work, so let's assume everyone needs assistance. Those who genuinely didn't can simply be taxed a bit more next year. It's very frightening watching this unfold and seeing Congress still bickering about how they want to set limits on relief. Every layer of means testing is a layer of delay, and an additional expense. People need to pay rent, utilities, and grocery bills right now. The absolute fairest thing Congress can do right now is send money to absolutely everyone. Also, $1000, as proposed by some, is inadequate. This isn't enough to cover rent in most households in a major metro area. It will likely become harder to create a political consensus around anything in the coming months, so please, let's make this amount one that will actually be adequate to help, and let's make it recurring until emergency measures can safely be lifted,
