Waive Michigan Educator Evaluations for 2020-2021

67 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

This has been an unprecedented year in the field of education. Despite the myriad challenges, teachers, school staff, and administrators are working collaboratively to provide an excellent education to Michigan’s students during this global crisis. To do this, they are dedicating countless more hours of expertise and labor than they ever have. The current law requires educators to be evaluated during this pandemic. During a typical school year, these evaluations require hours of an individual educator’s time, often adding up to several whole work days of labor. For an administrator who is doing the evaluating, evaluations occupy a sizable portion of the work day, every day, for the majority of the year. Unfortunately, even in a typical school year, school staff and administrators report that the evaluation process does not support authentic professional growth for educators. Of course, this is not a typical school year. During this year - a year of uncertainty, a new paradigm of instruction, and swift calls to change course, the law that requires educator evaluations is an undue burden. Considering what evaluations are like in a typical year, it is clear that during a pandemic, evaluations are not the best use of the time of school staff or administrators. Educators need all of the time that the state and districts can give them to deliver the best instruction and support to Michigan’s students. Please make the decision to waive educator evaluations for the 2020-2021 academic year so that teachers and administrators can devote all of their time to the young people in front of them. Michigan’s students deserve the best education that we can give them. For the sake of Michigan’s future, I hope that you will support Michigan’s educators with this request.
