An open letter to the U.S. Congress

We can't wait until 2025 for a $15 minimum wage

I'm very glad that Congress is moving forward with legislation to raise the minimum wage. It is long overdue, and the proposed legislation has many great features: automatic raises due to cost of living increases, eliminating the lower tipped minimum wage, and removing the ability of employers to pay disabled people less for the same work. Those are all excellent things that organizers and experts have been calling for for a very long time now. However, I was dismayed to see that the minimum wage won't even reach $15/hr until 2025. MIT's Living Wage Calculator currently estimates the minimum needed to qualify as a true living wage in America as $16.54/hr. That's as of 2019. We don't know what changes 4 more years will bring in our economy, but we know the dollar tends to decrease in buying power over time, and that $15 is already lower than $16.54. I fear by allowing so much time for a gradual rise, we will wind up still well behind what's needed for an actual living wage, and stuck there for the long term due to the automatic increases meaning the wage doesn't come up for debate regularly. I urge you to consider accelerating this timeline, or raising the final wage to be hit in 2025. $15 was the goal in 2012, nearly 9 years ago now, when the "Fight for $15" movement was born. By 2025, that number will be 13 years out of date. American workers can't afford to wait for a "living wage" that probably won't even qualify as one anymore in any city in America by the time it rolls around. Americans can't put their bills and rent and mortgage on hold until 2025 just to keep shareholders comfortable. Please, be a little bolder.
