An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (FL only)

SB-86 is bad for students and families! Please vote no.

96 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

I am your constituent and I am writing to urge you to oppose Senate Bill 86 and any restrictions to the Bright Futures program. Florida's talented students rely on Bright Futures to attend college. Passing this bill will hurt students and parents all across the Florida. Currently, Academic Scholars receive funding equal to 100% of tuition and fees, and Medallion Scholars receive 75% of tuition and fees. Benacquisto Scholars receive funding equal to the institutional cost of attendance for in-state students, minus the sum of Bright Futures and their National Merit Scholarship award. All of this would change if SB 86 is enacted, as it makes Academic, Medallion, and Benacquisto Scholarship amounts variable, subject to legislative modification each year. As currently written, SB 86 thus makes college financial planning difficult for students and families alike, more so for eligible students of limited means. Furthermore, this bill will drive away our own talented students who will find more funding out-of-state. Bright Futures recipients are already high-performing students, with community service and exceptional GPA and test scores. These students will have no problem receiving guaranteed financial aid from a school not in Florida if they are offered a solid amount. Bright Futures as it stands is already successful in supporting our top students. Please represent your constituents, and Florida's hundreds of thousands of students and vote against SB-86.
