An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect and Strengthen the Affordable Care Act

9 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Just over 10 years ago, a momentous and historic legislation was passed called the Affordable Care Act. From its very inception, there have been efforts to gut the act, remove the teeth that would make it effective, and to make it null and void. Currently there are over 23 million Americans that are on the ACA and have no other options for healthcare coverage. President Trump signed an executive order, titled “PROTECTING PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS”, which, experts say, lacks the teeth to protect those with pre-existing conditions. A study published on October 29th, 2020 found that as many as 68,000 more Americans could die each year as a direct result of the ACA being overturned. As Americans we should not stand for this loss of American lives. Yes, healthcare costs have indeed gone up over the years. I would like to contend that this is due to the systematic dismantling of the ACA instead of strengthening it to close loopholes. Over the past four years, instead of making America great, our leaders have set it far behind our allies and even our enemies in taking care of their citizens. Something must be done to make healthcare affordable and to be quite honest, a human right.
