I'm writing after seeing your comments to the press today that the impeachment trial would be a poor use of the Senate's time and the body should consider censure instead. This would be a mistake not only in the treatment of former President Trump but the example it would set for future administrations -- that even if the president tries to overthrow the government to stay in office, which is arguably the worst crime a president can commit, there will be no attempt to impose real consequences even from the opposition party. If Republicans are bound and determined to let him off the hook, let them own it. Hold a trial, show the world the evidence that Donald Trump started an insurrection designed to kill the very people now defending him, and let them vote "not guilty" in front of the American people. I know it's not the legislative agenda you hoped for on Jan. 5 but I can't think of a better use of the Senate's time.
