An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (MA only)

Urge Closure of Indoor Dining to Prevent COVID-19 Spread in MA

26 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

Dear Governor Baker and MA Legislators, We are gravely concerned about the exponential increase in COVID-19 cases. Massachusetts is running out of hospital space, ICU beds, and trained staff. Surgeries have been canceled and cancer screenings delayed. We applaud the recent rollbacks, but they are not enough. If masks are not worn indoors, there is high risk for viral transmission. Unmasked gatherings in restaurants and bars are contributing to the surge in cases. The most important public health message is: "Masks should be worn at all times around people who are not in your household." Asking Massachusetts residents to avoid in-home gatherings while simultaneously allowing unmasked dining at restaurants and bars not only undermines this message but adds to the confusion regarding acceptable behavior. This inconsistency not only will continue to fuel viral transmission in restaurants but also will increase silent viral spread in private homes. We urge you to immediately close indoor dining, bars, and casinos. We understand the struggle between the immediate economic consequence of increased restrictions, and, to mitigate the impacts of these closures, we encourage you to use state resources for stopgap funding until the federal government steps in with the next COVID-19 relief bill. More than 500 MA residents died last week, which is more than double the number from the week before. We are running out of time. Act now and save lives. Close indoor dining, casinos, and bars. Sincerely,
