Dump the filibuster to save voting rights, human rights and democracy. Come up with new senate rules to defend against obstruction and partisanship.
In the past, the filibuster was scaled back so it would not apply to judicial or cabinet appointments and some budgetary measures. It should be suspended again for the voting rights legislation.
We need to prevent states from limiting voting access, and creating unfair redistricting.
Also, let's try to maintain fairness in public discourse by preventing media monopoly of radio, tv and newspapers.
The FCC Fairness Doctrine of 1949 was repealed in 1987, and it’s been a catastrophe ever since. Without the fairness rules, we have seen the growth of hateful and dishonest radio and tv broadcasts like Rush Limbaugh and Fox News.
The Federal Communications Commission fairness doctrine needs to be reinstated. It would require licensed television and radio broadcasters to present both sides when discussing political or social issues.
