Take action to achieve herd immunity

The New York Times reported today that we are unlikely to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19 in the United States. This is not an inalienable fact but a policy choice. By failing to offer incentives for vaccination or place restrictions upon people who are unvaccinated, the US government has made a choice. Doing nothing is not more neutral or fair than doing something. By doing nothing, the US government has implicitly decided that immunosuppressed people, who are both vulnerable to severe illness with COVID-19 and who may not develop an effective immune response to vaccination, should have their freedom restricted by the continued presence of COVID-19 in our communities. Instead, the federal government should place tax penalties or restrictions upon people who could get vaccinated but choose not to. These people have made a choice to endanger their neighbors and they should be the ones who have to live with the consequences. Herd immunity is attainable in the United States, but it requires conviction and action from the government.
