An open letter to the U.S. Congress Support The Equality Act
8 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers! Hello:
No one should face discrimination because of who they are or who they love – but in 30 states, people are not protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This leaves LGBTQ people vulnerable to mistreatment and discrimination in employment, housing, and public spaces.
As your constituent, I urge you to take action on this devastating gap and support the Equality Act, legislation to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination.
As a mental health professional in America, I personally see how discrimination to individuals affects their overall wellbeing which extends to every area of their lives. The lack of explicit federal protections for sexual orientation and gender identity is particularly troublesome given that fewer than half of states have explicit state laws prohibiting such discrimination— meaning, for example, that it remains legal in most states to deny someone healthcare, simply because they are LGBTQ. Clear and explicit nondiscrimination protections are needed to ensure that LGBTQ people have a fair chance at providing for themselves and their families—and are treated fairly and equally throughout all areas of daily life.
The American people support protections like those afforded in the Equality Act. I ask you to join them and support an end to anti-LGBTQ discrimination in my state and across the country.
Thank you.
