Subject: Critical need to release vaccines to India The Indian American community is increasingly playing an important role in shaping the political dialog and serving the American public. Their political and financial contribution to the election of President Biden and Vice President Harris has been unprecedented. Many of us personally campaigned to get out the vote and spread the message for the Democratic party. As a community, we are in a state of shock, given the Covid crisis in India. This crisis continues to deteriorate by the minute. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, as of April 26, India saw a new record high with 352,991 new Covid cases and 2,812 deaths (believed to be severely underreported). This was the fifth straight day that over 300k cases were recorded by the country. Nearly 1 million cases have been reported in the last 72 hours1. The highly contagious double mutant virus found in India poses an international health threat and economic risk. The pandemic will not be under control anywhere until it is under control everywhere, particularly a nation as integral to the global economy as India is. We appreciate the recent decision taken by the Biden administration to "immediately" make available sources of raw materials required to scale up production of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine in India. However, the scale and the urgency of need remains massive. While India has distributed 139 million vaccine doses, only 1.6% of the population has been fully vaccinated. In contrast, the US has fully vaccinated 29% of the population and provided first doses to over 50% of the adult population, with the pace of vaccination uptake falling2. The US continues to store tens of millions of doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. According to NY Times, about 30 million doses are waiting in an AstraZeneca facility in Ohio and tens of millions of doses are waiting in an Emergent BioSolutions facility in Maryland3. The US has already agreed to send several million doses to Mexico and Canada as of March 2021. With the supply of Pfizer, Moderna and J&J vaccines already projected to exceed the need in the US in the short-term, it is beneficial for the US to direct this excess supply to the areas where it is most urgently needed. In order to curb the spread of this virus, we need to get these vaccines to India now. Helping in this pandemic will go a long way in re-establishing respect for the US in Asia and the world. We respectfully but strongly call on the Biden Administration to release its AstraZeneca and other excess vaccine doses to India. 1https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html 2 https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations 3https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/11/us/politics/coronavirus-astrazeneca-united-states.html
