An open letter to the U.S. Congress Truth and Accountability Is a Precondition for Reconciliation - US Congress
29 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers! Hello, I am a constituent and member of Indivisible. First let me say that I am very glad that you are safe and unharmed after last week’s horrific Capitol invasion and siege, and I am grieving that there was any loss of life and damage to valuable and meaningful property in the heart of our elected democratic republic. But I remain hopeful that with the responsible leadership of patriotic members of the Democratic caucus and a few Republicans, what happened to our nation’s Capitol and the terror inflicted on lawmakers and staff, will be a never-repeated event and the last, most extreme cautionary tale of this horrible time in American history. I demand that Congress pursue truth, transparency, and full accountability from all who were involved in the planning, funding, and execution of the January 6 terrorist attack. I want to make it clear that lawmakers who participated in the dishonest attempt to overturn the election must face real consequences, starting with censure and removal from committee assignments, up to and including removal from Congress. Legislators who were complicit in the recent coup attempt, however small their role, must be held to account if they supported this dishonest effort to ignore the will of the voters. There must also be the possibility of criminal charges, sentencing, and imprisonment for legislators who gave reconnaissance and planning aid to terrorists, and to those who committed acts of treachery and violence. This is critical to a commitment to truth, which is a necessary precondition of reconciliation. No “moving on” without justice. Thank you for your time and attention.
