I am a constituent deeply concerned about the climate crisis and the effects that it will have on our planet. 2020 tied as the hottest year in recorded history and we once again saw an increase in natural disasters. As a coastal state with a vital maritime economy, the climate crisis and rising sea levels will be especially detrimental to us and our communities. While I am glad that the legislature was able to pass the recent climate bill, I do not feel that it effectively meets the scale or scope of the crisis. In order to prevent the devastating impacts of warming beyond 1.5° C, international climate scientists and experts say that the entire world must have net-zero emissions by 2050. In this path to net-zero, there will inevitably be laggards and leaders both based on capability and intention. Our Commonwealth's economic resources and history of progressive policies make us well positioned to lead in surpassing these standards, so that by 2050 we are not merely net-zero but significantly carbon-negative. I therefore am calling on you to support and cosponsor [HD.3372 / SD.2170], An Act investing in a prosperous, clean Commonwealth by 2030. This bill, if enacted, would firmly place Massachusetts as an international leader on climate legislation and ensure a safe, livable planet for future generations. The IPCC 2030 bill boldly sets the target year of 2030 as the deadline for bringing the state to net-zero emissions and fully renewable electricity, and establishes a comprehensive plan for how to get there. Through clear definitions of renewable energy sources and net emissions, it will hold the executive branch accountable. Additionally, the IPCC 2030 bill acknowledges that the proposed decarbonization timeline requires that those most impacted by the climate crisis are centered, and thus outlines a just transition for fossil fuel workers as well as protections for low income and environmental justice communities. This bill would reshape the global discussion on the responsibility of government in protecting our shared planet. Thank you for your time and consideration.
