An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Include Direct Payments for Adult Dependents

115 so far! Let’s get to 250 signers!

Adult dependents consist of a large swath of people who are often ignored. From college students, to other young adults (like me), to the disabled under someone else’s care. We were left out of receiving stimulus payments associated with the CARES Act earlier this year. Upon learning of this, I asked you all why it was allowed to happen. It was admitted by members of Congress - including some of you - that not including adult dependents was an “oversight” and I was assured that it would be corrected in the next bill. We are at the next bill and it has still not been corrected. Not only does this mean my particular group will not receive a stimulus payment but our claimants will not receive the extra money Congress set aside for child dependents either. While I’m doing eh during these rough financial times, I still have not worked since March. However, I feel particularly angry for my fellow adult dependents of all ages who have been unjustly neglected. Those who are in an even worse predicament than I am. We have all be left out and feel betrayed by you, our representatives. Many of us whom, despite being claimed as dependents, still work jobs and pay taxes. It is particularly infuriating when we also see Congress appropriate funding for a border wall, a “three-martini lunch” tax break for corporations, and funding for Israel in this current legislation yet somehow cannot come up with a modest amount to add us in. As your constituent, I am frustrated, I am appalled, and I would like a satisfactory answer as to why adult dependents were left out again after assurances that it would not happen.
