An open letter to the President

Refusal of State Standardized Assessment & Call for Waivers

39 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

President Biden and local district administrator: I understand that schools are required to administer yearly statewide standardized assessments in math, English/Language Arts, and science under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA); I further understand that I have a parental right to refuse my child(ren)’s participation in these tests. In exercise of that right, and in light of the fact that the U.S. Department of Education has failed to offer assessment waivers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I am writing for two primary reasons: 1) to refuse to allow my child(ren) to participate in the spring 2021 statewide assessment administration and; 2) to urge President Biden to take action by fully waiving the assessment requirement for the 2021 school year. No one in my school or district has suggested that my child should be excluded from participating; this is my personal choice as a parent. My decision to refuse in no way reflects on the hard work and talent of the educators, administrators, and support staff within my local district. I expect that my child(ren) will not be punished for my decision to refuse testing, and will be permitted to read, or participate in some other enriching activity, during the test. Further, I expect that non-participation in testing will not affect any course placement decisions for my child. Thank you, in advance, for respecting my refusal.
