An open letter to the U.S. Congress Abolish the Electoral College
271 so far! Let’s get to 500 signers! Abolish the electoral college. As noted by the nonpartisan Brookings Institution in 2019, “At a time of high income inequality and substantial geographical disparities across states, there is a risk that the Electoral College will systematically overrepresent the views of relatively small numbers of people due to the structure of the Electoral College.” In other words, the electoral college is undemocratic. In addition, as of September 2020, a Gallup poll showed a majority of Americans favor abolishing the electoral college.
The electoral college is based in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution, so abolishing it will require a constitutional amendment. This will require at least two-thirds affirmation from both the U.S. House and Senate, and approval from at least 38 out of 50 states. Therefore, I ask my state and federal representatives to amend the Constituion to abolish the electoral college.
