Please Adopt HR 8438 by Unanimous Consent after the House Passes It

I am writing to ask you to support the passing by unanimous consent of HR 8438 – Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act of 2020, which is scheduled for a floor vote in the House this week. This bipartisan bill denounces the massively fraudulent presidential election in Belarus, which took place on August 9, 2020. Alyaksandr Lukashenka allegedly received 80% of the popular vote to claim the sixth term in power and extend his 26-year rule. The bill makes it clear that the U.S. does not recognize these fraudulent election results and clears the path for the United States to join the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada in imposing sanctions against persons responsible for the falsifications of the elections and the human rights abuses that followed and remain ongoing. November 16, 2020 marks 100 days of peaceful protests in Belarus. The people are demanding an end to political persecution and violence, a new free and fair election, and the release of all political prisoners. Despite nearly a dozen confirmed deaths and nearly 500 confirmed cases of torture while in police custody, the protests have remained peaceful. The bill will help Belarusians build a more democratic government and open society. Belarusians have put their lives and wellbeing on the line for fundamental political freedoms and human rights that are enjoyed by Americans and championed by The United States since our founding. I strongly believe that it is time for the United States to show its support of the Belarusian people and stand up to Lukashenka’s dictatorial regime. Thank you in advance for your support of adopting HR 8438 – Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act of 2020 by unanimous consent once the House passes this bipartisan bill.
