PA Health Secretary: fracking is a public health crisis

31 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

Health Secretary Dr Levine has been a pillar of strength for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania during the COVID19 crisis. She has shown tremendous leadership in the face of adversity. I will be forever grateful for her contributions. I am contacting you today to ask about another health crisis: the harms of fracking on Pennsylvanians. As Dr Levine’s replacement is considered, I urge you to recognize the need for a Health Secretary who also takes the concerns of the fossil fuel industry as seriously as the concerns of this pandemic. According to the 7th edition of the The Compendium of Scientific, Medical, and Media Findings Demonstrating Risks and Harms of Fracking, “Fracking, a major source of two greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, is incompatible with climate solutions. Climate change is a public health crisis and receives our close attention in this seventh edition.” and also “Public health harms now linked with drilling, fracking, and associated infrastructure include cancers, asthma, respiratory distress, rashes, heart problems, and mental health problems. Multiple studies of pregnant women living near fracking operations across the nation show impairments to infant health, including birth defects, preterm birth, and low birth weight.” It is critical that our next Health Secretary put Pennsylvanians before the profits of the fossil fuel industry. Thank you for your continued service to the people of Pennsylvania.
