Accountability for yesterday's insurrection
The events that took place in the Capitol yesterday were unacceptable and utterly predictable. The president, obviously, holds a great share of the blame--he quite literally sent them. But he is not the only one who stoked the lies and fear for months, and, indeed, the presidency itself. Senator Ted Cruz has been relentless in his support of the lies that have incited violence. Those who raised objections just for the sake of stalling--with no evidence to back them up--and those who voted to sustain these objections have been involved in inciting fear and distrust and ultimately violence for months now. I am asking that you vote to impeach President Trump. I am asking that you vote with Rep. Cori Bush to remove Republicans from Congress who were instrumental in trying to overturn the results of the election. I am asking that you expel Cruz and Hawley from their positions, and if that is not possible, to strip them of all committee assignments. Our democracy depends on what you do now. This is not a time for "meeting in the middle" or getting along with the "fine people on both sides" (words the president used to talk about neo-Nazis). Our capitol was invaded and overrun yesterday. Our sacred tradition of peaceful transfer of power was shaken. It is the time to hold the line--you were elected because you promised your constituents you would. Please know that we will remember who stood up to this regime. Please let it be you. Hold these people accountable for the terrorist attack yesterday. It is your responsible to hold the line for democracy. Do not roll over and let them get away with this. Do not play nice right now. Do not let them drag this beautiful country down with them. I beg you to hold them accountable. We will have no peace until we have had justice.
