An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Democratic reforms - districts and preferential voting

9 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Watching some dubious QAnon characters be sworn in this term, and seeing their shameful behavior on Jan 6 hours after the Capitol riots, has made it starkly clear that gerrymandering is poisoning the House. Highly partisan districts lead to highly partisan primary candidates. Please take some time in President Biden's first two years to focus on meaningful democratic reforms. First, we need to shake up voting districts. They need to be created by nonpartisan commissions or by algorithms that optimize for equal population and area. Or proportional representation! Second, we need preferential voting to give citizens the opportunity to support candidates other than the "electable" one from "their" party. I believe that these two simple measures could seriously heal the partisan toxicity in DC, forcing our representatives to represent the purple shades of their state and not the deep red or blue of their gerrymandered district. Thank you for your consideration!
