An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Distilleries being fined thousands for producing sanitizer.

7 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

American craft distilleries stepped up in a big way during 2020. More than 800 distilleries pivoted from alcohol to sanitizer, in order to help with severe shortages. Many of these distilleries donated the sanitizer or sold it at cost. This is during a time that their sales revenue was slashed, due to the COVID-19 related closure of tasting rooms and cocktail bars, loss of tourism, and the inability to offer in-store sampling. Now the FDA is fining many of these distilleries $14,000 for helping their communities in a fearful time of crisis, due to a provision in the CARES Act that reformed regulation of nonprescription drugs. These businesses should be rewarded for their outstanding action, not punished and potentially sentenced to closure. As an elected representative of the people, it is my hope that you take action to protect these small businesses and the livelihood of these generous and caring American Patriots.
