I have witnessed with horror the staged confirmation hearing of judge Barrett to replace the esteemed and irreplaceable Judge Ginsburg. I find it abhorrent that you would agree to push this nomination through over helping your constituents in COVID relief. I find it alarming that you choose to change the rules to suit your outcome. You didn’t have a quorum for a committee vote, and you chose to ignore rules and vote anyway. This push contradicts the arguments made by GOP senators in the past that Supreme Court judges should not be nominated just before a presidential election. Voting has already started and this process is ignoring the will of the voters. This nominee is simply not qualified. When asked to name the 5 basic freedoms that the 1st amendment offered, she forgot an important one. When asked a simple question on voter intimidation, she couldn’t answer. When asked about supporting documents about her past papers on racial injustice, she couldn’t answer. She couldn’t even answer a basic question of peaceful transfer of power, or on climate change. She wouldn’t answer a question if Griswold (a case on the right to contraception) was decided correctly, calling into question her judgement. In the case of Doe vs. Purdue, Amy Coney Barrett suggested that the man who had been found guilty of sexual violence had been discriminated against due to his gender. If this were treated as a job interview, this candidate would not be offered a position. Why then, would you confirm this unqualified candidate? This candidate has much less experience and knowledge than Merrick Garland, who, wasn’t even given a hearing. She has also refused to commit to recusing herself if a case involving the 2020 elections were presented before the SCOTUS. For these reasons I ask, as a voter, that you do not confirm this nominee as it would cause irreparable damage to the democratic process, and to future generations.
