Possible redevelopment of Calumet Country Club in Homewood, IL.

I am writing to express concern over the news of a possible redevelopment of Historic Calumet Country Club Golf Course in the south suburbs, specifically bordering the Homewood, Hazel Crest and East Hazel Crest communities. Green Space in these communities are at a premium as much of these communities are older and have been widely developed. Historic Calumet Country Club with it’s wealth of trees, shrubbery, lakes and wild life was purchased by a developer out of Arizona because of it’s easy access to major expressways. The intent is to convert acres of green space into a trucking hub. This land borders residential areas and would allow trucks and other pollution causing industries to tax the health and infrastructure of our communities. When the village of Homewood opposed the initial plan of the developer they were threatened with annexation from Homewood and reattachment to either Hazel Crest or unincorporated Cook County. The village leaders of Homewood and Hazel Crest have come out in opposition of this type of industrial use. We in the community value the limited green spaces we have and would like to see the land used for projects that are environmentally beneficial to the health and wellbeing of ALL it’s residents.  Too many commercial and industrial developments are being moved to southern Cook County because its communities are less affluent than our Western and Northern neighbors. This burden is affecting minority communities the heaviest and amounts to environmental racism. I beseech you to look into this development and commit to deny the annexation into unincorporated Cook County. Hazel Crest, Homewood and Cook County should be working in conjunction to develop properties that benefit all interests instead of protecting and encouraging outside development that has no long term stake in the health, growth and infrastructure of this area.   Please help us!!!!!!!
