An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reauthorize the Emergency FMLA Program

7 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

I'm writing today about the Emergency FMLA program that was authorized by the CARES Act. It offered parents an option to stay home while their kids were out of school due to school closures due to COVID. In my area, we still have many schools that are on hybrid schedules, with no plans to change to full time school anytime soon. Since Congress did not reauthorize the E-FMLA program in the most recent stimulus bill, these parents may be in a position where they can get fired from their employers now when they have to stay home with their kids when they are out of school. Employees are running out of their earned time to cover these days, and there is no end in sight to the kids being out of school. Most of the other parents that I talk to don't even care about having the extra funds that the E-FMLA program provided to them on the days when they had to be home with their kids, they just want to know that their jobs are protected during that time that they have to be off. When is congress really going to start looking out for parents in 2021? This virus and the restrictions it's causing aren't going away at the end of the year, and congress needs to reauthorize the E-FMLA program to protect workers jobs while they are at home taking care of their kids, with or without the monetary benefits provided in that program.
