An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Issue a public statement condemning the militarization and violence in Colombia

Hi, I'm writing as a constituent to ask for your support in resolving the current human rights emergency in Colombia. In response to the ongoing National Strike, which began on April 28 to protest a regressive tax reform bill, major cities have been militarized by both the National Police and the Colombian military. As a result of the repression, 52 civilians have been killed, 548 have been disappeared, 15 people have been subjected to sexual violence, and 38 protestors have received intentional eye injuries. The city of Cali has accounted for 35 of the 52 people killed nationwide. Most of the victims are young adults between the ages of 18 and 36 years old. In light of the vast military and police assistance the United States government has provided to Colombia, Congress has unique leverage vis-à-vis Colombian authorities to stop the systematic violation of human rights. To date, statements of concern have been issued by Senator Patrick Leahy and Representatives Jim McGovern, Gregory Meeks, Hank Johnson, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes. Please issue a public statement condemning the militarization of Colombia’s cities and the use of violence against the protests in Colombia. Request President Duque immediately call a ceasefire to stop the illegal repression of protests, and immediately withdraw the militarized security forces from urban center. Request from the State Department a review of the Leahy Law to include units of the Colombian National Police and Military Forces involved in gross violations of human rights. Thank you.
