Make the Covid-19 vaccine more accessible to the Latinx Community in Washington

11 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

I am very concerned about the current vaccination plan and the lack of access given to the Latinx and migrant communities. I request that you take the following three swift actions to control the spread of COVID-19 and prioritize the health of all Washingtonians. 1. Prioritize and target vaccination of Latinx populations and communities to control the spread of COVID-19 at this time. Only 2% percent of Latinx people are being vaccinated for COVID-19 yet the population represents 34% of reported cases of infection. If the current system of vaccination is not more targeted, COVID-19 will continue to spread. 2. Designate farmworkers as essential workers and prioritize their vaccination because they provide food for all families in Washington. The majority of farmworkers are migrants and are overlooked by current vaccination strategies. Not prioritizing this population results in many untimely deaths and strain to food production in Washington and across the United States. 3. Immediately vaccinate community health workers in these communities and work collaboratively with Latinx community organizations to close the access gap of current vaccination implementation. Over 60 community health workers are ready and willing to help to raise the rate at which the Latinx community is vaccinated. With their localized knowledge of their communities, effective strategies can be created to affect a high-risk community to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Washington. 4. Latinx people face many barriers that must be considered when vaccinating vulnerable communities. These barriers include limited access to the internet which makes it challenging to stay up to date with vaccine resources. Washington has a large population of Spanish and non-Spanish/indigenous language speaking people. The website is a barrier itself, making it difficult for non-English speakers to find the translation option and with the only other language available being Spanish. The language accessibility of this website needs to be prioritized.
