Allegany County NAACP Urges You to Support SB494/HB409

47 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

The Allegany County NAACP urges you to vote FAVORABLY on the Juvenile Restoration Act (SB494/HB409). When it comes to juveniles serving extreme adult sentences, Maryland has the worst racial disparity in the nation - 87% of those eligible under this bill are Black. That means that at a rate of nearly 9 in 10, we are throwing Black children away, saying that they are beyond redemption. That is unacceptable. No child should be sentenced to die in prison. Juvenile Restoration Act (HB409) Quick facts 400: Over 400 people who are serving life or life equivalent sentences for crimes they committed as children have already served in excess of 20 years and would be immediately eligible for review under HB409. At 20 years, everyone eligible for review under this bill would have served more time in prison than they did in society. 114: 114 of those serving life or life equivalent sentences for crimes committed as youth are 50 years of age or older.   87%: Eight-seven percent of people who will be immediately eligible under HB409, for crimes they committed as children, are Black. 82%: At 82%, Maryland ranks first in the nation with the highest proportion of Black youth sentenced to life without parole The JRA is not just about making sure no kid is ever told they are beyond the hope of redemption. It is a crucial matter of racial justice.
