An open letter to the U.S. Congress

One Year of Isolation and No End in Sight

1,039 so far! Let’s get to 2,000 signers!

We are fast approaching the one year mark that residents in long term care have been denied visitors and all those federally protected rights that outside visitors, family, friends, powers of attorney, clergy, and court-appointed legal guardians help protect including the right to practice their religion, the right to choose their own physician, the right to use their own property, the right to make decisions about their care, the right to leave the facility, the right to participate in activities and community gatherings, and the right to be free of abuse and neglect. Many of them cannot even receive mail. These rights have been on hold for almost a year now but only for those residents who have survived the rapid cognitive decline, weight loss and despondency that comes from contact starvation and being stripped of the human connections they have held dear in their lives. And Congress has been silent. With the administration of vaccines in long term care facilities to both staff and residents, it is time for our elected officials at the national level to step up and make the restoration of all these rights mandatory to those people whose only crime is needing 24/7 supervision or 24/7 skilled nursing in order to survive. Congress, end this now.
