Texas Homeschool Families Need Your Help: Please Help Pass SB 491 and HB 547

331 so far! Let’s get to 500 signers!

Homeschoolers in Texas have a huge need, and I am asking you to help us today. Currently Texas homeschoolers are not allowed to participate in academic or athletic extracurricular activities through the University Interscholastic League (UIL) within Texas public schools. This severely limits the activity options for rural homeschool families who might have no other options, and it severely limits the number of affordable activity options for urban homeschool families. Even though homeschool families pay taxes to fund these activities, they have been discriminated against by not being allowed access since the early 1900's. In 2019, a survey by the state homeschooling organization THSC found that better access to extracurricular activities was the #1 opportunity that Texas homeschool families said they needed. Since that time, homeschooling has exploded with even more families who need access to these opportunities, including many for whom UIL access was the norm when they were in public school. In addition to all of that, today 35 other states allow homeschool students equal access to their UIL equivalent program and activities. Some have allowed this access for 50 years. Texas is way behind the curve on this issue as we are now one of only a handful of states that continues to deny equal access to homeschool students. Will you help fix this today by helping to get SB 491 or HB 547 passed and signed into law? Thank you!
