An open letter to the U.S. Congress Restore the Fairness Doctrine: stop lies from destroying democracy
12 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! Democracy Dies in Darkness. The Washington Post is not wrong. Civic community is poisoned by lies. When people believe absurdities they commit atrocities.
Trump lied to the American people daily. His big lie about the election has torn America apart, given life to narratives of victimhood and conspiracy, and brought us to the brink of civil war and dictatorship.
Please retire the expression "that's not who we are" because the "we" that includes all now includes White supremacist insurrectionists and believers in the lie.
All of your colleagues in the GOP need to publicly renounce the big lie or step down.
Please restore the Fairness Doctrine. Make it an urgent priority.
Fox News gave currency to lies. It should not be playing in military bases and public agencies. We cannot detrumpify and restore our democracy without a shared factually correct external reality.
The Voice of America will also urgently need de-trumpification.
I am counting on you to do your utmost to restore our scarred and trembling, troubled democracy.
This is no time for partisan handwringing. Nor for half measures. We need to stop the rot and prevent lies from ever moving to the Center of public discourse again. Any GOP handwringing about unity and healing needs to be met with a clear agenda of truth and accountability and public recantation. If you want unity, start with a shared standard of truth in the media and the public conversation
