An open letter to State Governors (FL only)

Please do not sign SB 1028

23 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

Please do not sign SB 1028 into law. SB 1028 is discriminatory towards trans athletes now that Rep. Tuck’s amendment is added to the bill, which was initially about charter schools. Because trans sports ban is added to this bill, the NCAA will likely follow through with their promise to pull out of Florida and states who pass harmful legislation. We saw this happen in North Carolina when bigotry was signed into law, and the state was lost roughly $3.67 billion. On top of the bigotry in this bill, the bill also does not offer a clear pathway for adopted students to play sports. “A statement of a student's biological sex on the student's official birth certificate is considered to have correctly stated the student's biological sex at birth if the statement was filed at or near the time of the student's birth.” Adopted athletes have amended birth certificates. If they do not have the original birth certificate, can they play? Rep. Tuck refused to table this amendment to solve this issue- and yet, it is a crucial one. If the purpose is to protect women in sports, does that mean we do not protect adopted women who play sports, too? We are going to disagree- I believe trans women should play on a team of their gender identity. However, you may feel is differently. However, the economic impact to our state will be great because of boycotts to Florida once this bill is signed into law. This bill also hinders adopted children from being able to play a sport-regardless of their gender identity. Adopted athletes generally have an amended birth certificate, and can use that per the FHSAA. This bill overrides that and keeps them from playing on their teams. I beg of you to not sign this bill into law, as it is a flawed bill that was rushed through, and will harm MORE than just trans women athletes.
