An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (NY only) Invest in Higher Education
35 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers! As a student enrolled at the University at Albany and a constituent, I urge you to support funding for SUNY and CUNY programs, particularly, the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and the Excelsior Scholarship. These programs are crucial to expanding access to higher education to New Yorkers and give students the opportunity to pursue a college degree. They are not only crucial to sending students to college but investing in the students helps the state as a whole by educating a workforce and improving the economy. During this unprecedented time that has brought turmoil to many public institutions, including education, programs such as TAP, and Excelsior are in jeopardy. Although legislatures are making budget cuts, it is imperative that these programs continue to be funded. Funding TAP and Excelsior enables SUNY to be able to:
•Transform lives and create opportunity for a better tomorrow through research in all academic domains
•Provide affordable education to students through over 7,000 academic programs SUNY wide
•Educate the next generation of future educators, medical professionals, researchers, and businesspeople.
Investment in SUNY students is not only an investment in us, but in investment in the State of New York and will improve the chances of a better economic future of our state and nation. Please make funding education a higher priority by continuing to invest programs such as TAP and the Excelsior Scholarship.
