It’s good to see that Congressional Democrats appear to be successfully getting ready to pass a coronavirus relief bill.
However, unless you take seriously the need for filibuster reform, Republicans will kill everything we might attempt after this coronavirus bill. The result will be a do-nothing Congress. That means Dems WILL be wiped out in the 2022 midterms, because you will lose the support of millions of voters like me who worked hard in 2018 and 2020, only to see Dems fail to act on the big issues facing the country. At that point, the GOP will move to make their rule permanent by any means necessary.
The holdouts to reforming the filibuster are just two senators: Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. They are failing by blocking filibuster reform. But the blame also falls on the shoulders of the larger Democratic party for not doing more to seize this moment of crisis to explain to both these senators and to the public at large why Republicans have failed us so badly.
Dems seem to be giving up on the only thing that could actually save democracy, which is ending the filibuster. Democrats should give all of their energies to this issue. Failing to end the filibuster means Dems will lose power, perhaps permanently.
I implore you to publicly state that you will support filibuster reform. I urge you to make the case to you Senate colleagues. The filibuster must end. Or democracy itself may fall to a permanent, one-party rule and all the things we hope to accomplish will never be realized.
