An open letter to the U.S. Congress Censure your GOP colleagues' attempt to block the election
508 so far! Let’s get to 1,000 signers! I am appalled that so many house reps and even a few senators intend to contest the electoral votes in congress next week. I hope you are too.
All members of Congress will have sworn their oath to the constitution by then. Yet the conduct of the 140 house GOP and Senator Hawley is a blatant rejection of facts, truth, and the constitution.
Although the objections are bound to fail, they undermine trust in our institutions and electoral process. As Ben Sasse has observed, they are a dangerous stunt.
They also undermine Biden's legitimacy and ability to unify the country at a time of gravest national catastrophe.
What will you do to counteract this damaging stunt? I hope you will speak out and also take all appropriate measures to censure the GOP election objectors. Congress needs to enforce its oath to the constitution. Please: don't let this behaviour slide. It's not trivial and you need to counteract the false narrative it perpetuates.
It happens that the 140 House GOP objectors all come from gerrymandered districts. That is why they have no Democratic accountability.
Please pass the John Lewis voting act pronto and take all possible federal actions to stop racist voter suppression.
As the vexatious lawsuits by Trump and Ken Paxton have shown, attempts to overthrow the election amount to racist voter suppression after the fact.
It's not enough to put up with procedural mischief and get Biden and Harris installed. You need to root out the toxic anti-Democratic attempt at a coup by your colleagues by using shame, censure and every other tool at your disposal.
I hope I can count on you to honor your oath to the constitution by insisting that others do so as well. Please ensure that I receive a reply to this message.
